Description and Purpose of the Course: This course introduces Mythical gods and heroes, through literature, art and religion of the ancient AND modern worlds.
(i) The past. We study “the roots of Western culture”-the Near East, Greece, and Rome- and provide an introduction to ancient civilizations through Art and literature.
(ii) The present. We consider what Myths show us about the human minds and the cultures that produced them. Myth is still all around us. Myths are not only historical, not only a product of “primitive” cultures; they pervade our lives and represent a whole way of thinking.
