Gemeinschaft is a term created by Ferdinand Tönnies used to describe one of the two types of social interaction. Gemeinschaft refers to the mutual dependence in community. Tönnies wrote about human society and the ideas that families have long histories, individuals interact with one another on a personal basis, and there is a sense of unity. Tönnies described that a community existed when people are interdependent on one another, such as in the workplace. This is opposite to Gesellschaft which refers to society.
