This course focuses both on the presence and influence of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese cultures in France and Francophone Canada. A theoretical framework and historical and cultural contexts provide the analytical tools to discuss cultural expressions of this influence that include (but is not limited to) literary narratives, poetry, film, art, manga, anime, cuisine, martial arts and tenets of Confucianism. Love, cultural dialogue, gender, otherness, identity, memory, exile are exemples of the topics covered by the class. Prerequisite: FREN 310 or instructor’s permission.
