Course Description ENGH 257 – Shakespeare 4 credits
________________________________________
Explore five representative plays in several dramatic genres spanning Shakespeare’s career—tragedy, comedy, history, and tragicomedy. Research and discover what these plays meant to their original audiences and assess their shifting cultural relevance as they’ve been variously reinvented for the page, stage, and screen. Appraise Shakespeare’s interest in language and rhetoric, issues of gender, race, love and desire, theatrical spectacle, violence and political power. Throughout, students will have the opportunity to contribute to weekly discussion and debate, as well as to construct original arguments in two analytic papers and a class presentation.
