In this course, you will learn how to compose thoughtful, dynamic short stories. Each week we’ll consider discrete elements of craft, including characterization, plot, details, and point of view. Since good writers are attentive, critical readers, we’ll also examine a number of stories by contemporary writers such as Junot Díaz, Jennifer Egan, Nam Le, and Denis Johnson. The workshop-style seminar depends on active participation, in-class and take-home writing assignments, formal critiques of one another’s work, and commitment to the process of revision. Please note: This course will focus on literary fiction; that is to say, no fantasy, horror, romance, young adult, or other “genre” submissions.
