Music and Meaning will investigate the complexity of music’s function and power in our lives. A myriad of historical debates on the nature of music point to the important role music plays in the human condition. The course will encourage discussion and debate on the nature of music through readings that span over one thousand years. Humans have tried to make sense of music from many different perspectives: Scientific, philosophical, emotional, behavioral, and numerical. The course will demonstrate how vast a definition of music can be. Music is much more than mere entertainment. Throughout the semester, each students will contribute to the ongoing debate and quest to understand what music is and why humans make it.
