In this course, you will learn how to compose thoughtful, satisfying short stories. Each week, we’ll consider discrete elements of craft, including characterization, structure, setting, and point of view. Since good writers are attentive, critical readers, we’ll also examine a number of stories by contemporary writers such as Mary Gaitskill, Junot Díaz, and Ben Marcus. The workshop-style seminar depends on active participation, in-class and take-home writing assignments, formal critiques of one another’s work, and commitment to the process of revision. Please note: This course will focus on literary fiction; that is to say, no fantasy, horror, romance, young adult, or other “genre” submissions.
