In Introduction to Film Analysis we will be looking at a wide range of films from different genres and various countries of origin — from the earliest silent shorts, to works of the Golden Age of the Hollywood studio system, to more contemporary documentary and animated film. We will learn the visual language of cinema and how to look at films from perspectives including, but not limited to, cinematography, editing, camera movement, sound, and setting.
Each week we will watch and discuss a new feature-length film. Then, in the second class of that week, we will analyze this film in detail. The overall goal will be to approach cinema with passion and curiosity— and to appreciate its role in shaping how we see the world.
