HIST-215: History by the Numbers, is a course in quantitative history. The course objectives are twofold: to develop students' understanding of important problems in contemporary U.S. society using historical quantitative data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other quality online sources. Second, the course aims to increase students' skills and confidence in using quantitative information, and of processing this information using basic statistical and presentation methods.

Interpreting and Making the News is an exploration of the creation and impact of news media and the tensions produced by recent shifts in news creation and distribution. Drawing on the latest research from the fields of journalism studies and media studies, we will examine topics including the evolution of journalism revenue models and the economic crisis in the media, the debate over how best to control the spread of misinformation in the media ecosystem, the role played by algorithm-driven media platforms in determining news delivery, and the struggle for control over local news media. We will focus mainly on the US, with some comparative discussion of other news systems.

The second part engages current research in neuroscience associated with mindfulness and meditation. Lastly, we consider the widespread current application of mindfulness to areas including law enforcement, education and healthcare, for which mindfulness provides methods for the management of interpersonal relations without judgment or reactivity.
