Course Description
An introduction to drawing as a way of making images, as a basis for work in other media, and as a process of discovery. Studio activities are grounded in observation and use various wet and dry media. Line, shape, and value are emphasized as essential components for exploring fundamental issues of composition, the structuring of form, the description of space and light, and as a means of individual expression.
In this class, we will explore drawing: its materials and tools, and its capability to describe, observe, narrate, and think through problems. Drawing is as old as any art form yet seems to regenerate itself constantly. We will examine different art historical moments, the role drawing played, and how contemporary artists use the medium. Specific topics include mark-making, line, form, value, positive/ negative space, figure/ ground, composition, perspective, and scale.
