This course introduces students to diverse theoretical frameworks, historical methods, and analytical practices for studying media content and form, in relation to the socio-cultural, political, and economic factors that have shaped media industries and institutions over the past century. Drawing on various historical, comparative, and interdisciplinary perspectives, students will acquire throughout the semester robust intellectual resources for the interpretation of, and critical engagement with, varied media forms.

This course will help develop skills to motivate and influence others. Influence is something you’ll use throughout your life and career. Sales, is making a career out of influencing others.
Sales is creating something from nothing, and is a vital and part of all businesses. This course explores a fundamental approach to sales – prospecting, building relationships, providing value, sales presentations, negotiations, and closing.

Sales management is often arbitrary and without structure, we will also demystify how to approach sales management. We will explore how to create a strong, clear, sales environment for a sales team by using analytics and tools to help drive and measure success. As a sales leader, you will also be a conduit between the organization and the organization’s most valuable commodity – it’s customers. The analytics will provide a guide as to how successful, or unsuccessful, the sales team will be in a particular timeframe. It is also sales management’s function to provide market feedback – i.e. the story behind the numbers, what customers want and what you see happening in the future.
While you might not think you want to pursue a career in sales, remember everyone sells. Whether you are in an interview, or you are trying to change someone’s opinion – you are selling. It is a life skill as well as a business skill.
We will explore sales and sales management through lectures, discussions on current business news, sales and business role play practice, papers, and presentations. Your participation, positive attitude and willingness to try new things, are keys to your success in this class.

This course will introduce the fields of organization design and strategy in order to provide a business-wide perspective on decision-making and framework for integrating the specialized knowledge that follows in the curriculum.

Course Description: Chinese 101 is designed for those students who have no previous knowledge of Common Chinese. Students with previous Chinese learning are strongly suggested to take this course if the placement test score is below 500. The course will teach in a systematic way all aspects of the Chinese language: pinyin, standard pronunciation/intonation, basic grammar, character writing, and the development of speaking and reading skills. The course is in simplified characters, however complicated character writing is allowed. CHIN 105 is the recitation for CHIN 101. CHIN 101 and CHIN 105 are co-required.

Grades: Class attendance and performance and quizzes 20%
Attending class is VERY important at this stage of your language learning. Three class absences are permitted--you should save those days for family emergencies or sickness. After that, one point will be deducted from the grades assigned to class attendance and participation. If you miss 12 meetings, you automatically fail the course.

Tests (4) 40%
Homework (10) 20%
Final exam; written and oral 20%

There are NO make-ups for quizzes, tests, and exams.
Handing-in of homework late results in reducing grades.

Class/Schedule:

We are going to finish Lesson 18 in this book by the end of this semester.

The first 12 lessons concentrate on pinyin--the sound system of Chinese, along with basic Chinese characters and grammar. We will go fast with these 12 lessons finishing them in 7 weeks. Then starting with Lesson 13, we will cover one lesson a week.


Student Learning Outcomes:
• Master the pinyin system
• Recognize the tones
• Able to write the characters with correct stroke order
• Recognize all the Chinese characters learned
• Master (able to write from memory) 100 key Chinese Characters
• Grasp the basic sentence components (subject, predicate, object, attributive and adverbial) and parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb and conjunction)
• Read the texts fluently
• Able to communicate using simple sentences (with most two verbs)

Movement for the Musical Stage (M4MS) is an exploration of dance in American musical theater. Students will analyze exemplars of musical theater; experience elements of dance and strategies of improvisation and composition; and apply choreographic tools and processes to create, individually and collaboratively, original movement studies and compositions. This is not a technique class, however, students will be moving, dancing, experimenting, creating and sharing throughout each session. No prior dance training required. Experimentation, wonder and joy, however, will be required!

In M4MS, students will use their bodies to communicate their thoughts and artistic choices through making dances. M4MS explores the body as an expressive, communicative instrument. The musical stage, for the purposes of this class, is the theatrical performance during which music (sound organized in time) is an integral and necessary element of the production, aka musical theater. We will focus primarily on the choreography of the body moving in time and space in relationship to the musical accompaniment, theme, plot and character.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all classes will be delivered via Zoom, an imperfect medium that will impact how we explore how we express and perceive the body moving in space, time and community. That said, all efforts will be made to acknowledge and address the challenges that this technology may provide and seek and exploit opportunities to experiment with M4MS on a mainly online platform. MFMS will be about dance in your spaces as well as the spaces that we will share on Zoom and through other electronic means of communication and learning.

And, one of the most important conditions of this class is to have fun learning and exploring.

The Drew Seminar introduces students to the intellectual life of a liberal arts education. Led by a faculty member dedicated to working with first-year students, the seminar provides a stimulating introduction to rigorous, college-level work that centers on the exploration of a particular topic or subject area, and includes development of critical thinking, information literacy, and writing skills, as well as oral and interpersonal communication skills. Activities include formal and informal writing, discussion of readings, oral presentations, and writing revision.

The critical reception to the popular and expanding body of work categorised as “autofiction” has seen it too often conflated with lightly fictionalised memoir, overlooking a long and rich literary heritage across continents and cultures. Focusing on its more recent permutations, this class will start with new definitions of the form emerging in France through Serge Doubrovksy and Nathalie Sarraute, tracking its scattered and various manifestations over the past half-century in order to recontextualise its contentious present-day paradigm, My Struggle by Karl Ove Knausgaard.

Working through complex ideas about identity and performance, the intersection between self-mythologisation and meta-literary practices, and straightforward accusations of the emetic, we will ask what is at stake in a declaration of truth-telling.

The syllabus will address literary failure in the autofictional films and writing of B.S. Johnson; trace the liberating influence of Chris Kraus’ I Love Dick, a gendered bricolage of memoir, theory and fiction, on the work of Sheila Heti; think about how to articulate negative space with Rachel Cusk; ask where the self writes from in Audre Lorde's biomythography; consider how genre and autofiction interact in Emmanuel Carrère's My Life as a Russian Novel; and reflect on contemporary autofictional flâneuries with Teju Cole's Open City and Ben Lerner's 10:04.

This course is a survey of the history, principles and practice of public relations. Students gain an understanding of the development and globalization of PR, the impact of PR on the news media, and the techniques and tactics of PR practitioners. They learn the concepts of “publics” and professionalism in PR practice. Students gain an understanding of the craft of public relations and its techniques by writing a news release and conceiving, researching and creating a multimedia PR plan for a client.

This class will immerse students in the critical social theory related to labor and digital innovation to examine some of the latest promises related to the future of work. Technologists and pundits regularly hype the impact of technology on the future of work. Some predict that automation will make work more efficient and maximize productivity. Other predict that automation may eliminate work altogether, leaving people either unemployed or free to peruse their passions.

Students will evaluate and challenge these popular claims by engaging with the work of anthropologists, media scholars, historians, and feminist scholars writing about rationalization of work, the Protestant work ethic, and emerging forms of free and invisible labor. As we consider the relationship between technology, society, and the future of work, you will be able to examine how technology that promises to create efficiency in the workplace often creates its opposite, how contemporary automation encodes and sharpens workplace inequality rather than alleviates it and how digital innovation often devaluates and obscures people’s contribution rather than eliminates work.

Media and Communications Colloquium

This course provides an immersion into the institutions and operations of communications and media through discussion with media practitioners and readings and discussion of industry trends. Central to this colloquium are lectures and panel discussions by guest speakers drawn from the fields of new and legacy media, advertising, communications, public relations, and publishing.

Marketing is a dynamic field that exists at the intersection of business and the social sciences. It is a field that engages in the study of consumer behavior as human behavior. This introductory course explores some of the fundamentals of marketing. It also approaches the practice of marketing from an interdisciplinary lens. As we place marketing into its wider business and social context, students will gain familiarity with key industry terminology while exploring new possibilities for marketing responsibly. This class will also broaden your imagination about where those who study marketing can work.

In this course, you will learn how to compose thoughtful, dynamic short stories. Each week we’ll consider discrete elements of craft, including characterization, plot, details, and point of view. Since good writers are attentive, critical readers, we’ll also examine a number of stories by contemporary writers such as Susan Choi, Emma Cline, Nam Le, and Tiphanie Yanique. The workshop-style seminar depends on active participation, in-class and take-home writing assignments, formal critiques of one another’s work, and commitment to the process of revision. Please note: This course will focus on literary fiction; that is to say, no horror, romance, or young adult submissions.

This course covers the materiality and mechanical production of manuscripts and printed books. Topics discussed in the class may include the production of parchment, paper-making, pigments, inks, illuminations, sewing and binding techniques, etching and engraving, development of the printing press and movable type, and mechanical reproduction, among other things. Beginning with the Carolingian Renaissance and moving through the history of scribal and print production until the end of the Victorian Period, focusing on the study of book-making in both manuscript and printed formats. Situated within the collections of Drew University’s own Special Collections and Archives, students will have the opportunity to receive a hands-on approach to understanding and working with the physical elements of manuscript production and printing history.
