Fall 2017
Choreography and Performance Studies

This is an in depth process of dance making. Class will focus on building students’ choreographic skillset in preparation to premiere a final work in the Dance Show at the end of the fall semester. There will be structured improvisations, composition assignments and group/solo projects to allow for exploration in finding choreographic source material and a beginning introduction to the student’s artistic voice.

Live performances, dance films, choreography videos and assigned readings will assist in the discussions, observations and writings on performative dance and the art of dance making. Sincere and complex research regarding the designated theme is expected in order to represent the material accurately and comprehensively. These various tools will add to the expression and expansion of our definition of choreography. Students will be expected to create a choreographic work that exhibits the theme of the dance show.

This fall 2017 dance show will present the embodied stories of Ezra Jack Keats. Drew students will be responsible for preparing a pre show workshop that shares the creative process with public school students and prepares these young audience members for the performance and an after show Q&A.

(Please note: This fall semester course is section 1, part one; the continuation of Choreography and Performance Studies section 2, part two takes place in the spring. To be eligible to take section 2 you must complete section 1 and receive permission from the professor.)
